WATER FOR ELEPHANTS: FILM REVIEW
I sat down comfortably in the cinema, full fat coke in one hand, salted popcorn in the other. As I took a handful I wondered what I would make of this film. I had mixed feelings, though predominantly positive ones; I am not Robert Pattinson's biggest fan however from what I could gage from the trailers of the film I thought this would be his chance to play more than a two dimensional character - *cough* twilight *cough* - so I decided to give him a chance.
The film's follows a travelling circus, lead by August, (played excellently by Christoph Waltz - but more about that later) and his wife Marlena (Witherspoon). Jacob (Pattinson) is a veterinary student who drops out from college following his parent's death, and joins the circus by chance as its vet. What ensues is love, murder, betrayal... all sounds pretty generic hey? Well, though the story may follow a conventional plot - poor guy and rich woman fall in love.. rich woman's husband angry.. WFE provides I think personally enough depth to enable us to engage and empathise with the characters. It also has some pretty shocking moments, Rosie the elephant was the cause of many 'awwws' and 'sssssss' (yes that's the sound of an intake of breath in horror) within the audience.
My verdict, go and see it! While it is oozing with Hollywood conventions - the whole story being told in flashback, the poor orphaned guy the most brilliant morals and care for women (awwwww) and the unattainable woman - it does provides laughs, shocks and if that fails.. CARNIES.. who can resist... ?
Witherspoon as Marlena
Although there was controversy around this casting choice, I personally felt Witherspoon fell into the role quite well. I considered who else I personally would have cast and all I could think of was possibly Rachel McAdams, however I personally think it worked well Witherspoon being older than Pattinson. She was a likable character and I was able to see her side of the story rather than rubbish her for having an affair. The only notable negative is perhaps the chemistry on screen between Marlena and Jacob., which I felt was a little contrived at times.
Pattinson as Jacob
Surprisingly worked well in the role. It required two sides; a soft, innocence changed later in the film to a protective dominance. Andrew Garfield audition for this role, and while I believe he would have been able to the portray the innocent Jacob I'm not sure he would have been as convincing as Pattinson was in the more heated argument and fight scenes. I did not think Pattinson would be that convincing but I actually thought he did a great job. And hey, when he's not pale and has regular coloured eyes, basically NOT A VAMPIRE.. he isn't that bad looking he hehe
Waltz as August
The character of August was dominant, heartless, weak at times, controlling and cruel. Oh hey Christoph Waltz! The best casting choice of the film personally. Inglorious Bastards saw Waltz, portraying such a similar character in the role of Col. Landa, which I believed aided him in the audience reception of the character. We already, well me personally, had this impression of Christoph Waltz for being a very powerful heartless character. Applying this to August was easy; and I even found myself thinking 'YESSSS' in the ending, horrific as it was. Thats good acting!
